How to Specify the Zipper and Usable Opening of a Custom Makeup Pouch

Specify coil or metal zipper elements, compatible components and usable opening for a custom makeup pouch. Turn the decision into a clear supplier brief.

A pouch can have enough room inside yet be awkward to load. The problem may be at the entrance: the slider parks in the way, the ends stop short of the side seams, or the lining catches as the user closes the bag. Asking for a longer zipper without locating the obstruction may leave the real issue unresolved.

This guide is for buyers who have selected a pouch format and need to brief its closure. If the format itself is still open, start with Rivta's custom makeup pouch options. The next decision is how that shape should open, what needs to pass through it, and which zipper assembly will be sampled.

Separate the three dimensions before choosing the zipper

Bag width is an external dimension

A width on a product drawing describes the pouch at specified measurement points. It does not tell you how far the zipper opens or how much of the mouth remains available once the slider, end tabs and seams are in place. Mark those points on the bag drawing instead of using one number for all three purposes.

Zipper order length needs its own measurement reference

The component supplier needs a defined zipper length. For example, YKK's measurement guide measures a closed-end zipper from the top of the slider to the bottom-stop tip and lists the tape extensions separately. It uses different endpoints for other constructions; where the top stop does not enter the slider, its stated starting point is the top stop.[1] Ask the selected supplier to mark the applicable endpoints on its drawing. Do not assume that total tape length is the zipper order length.

Usable opening is a finished-pouch requirement

Define the entry space with the zipper fully open and the pouch in its intended loading position. Show where the slider rests and which parts of the opening are restricted by the sewn ends. A photo with marked measurement points is more useful than an unexplained “opening width.”

For a soft pouch, record whether the mouth is resting naturally or held open. For a curved opening, show the entry gap as well as the zipper path; a measurement along the curve cannot by itself establish whether a rigid item will pass through. Do not stretch the sample simply to achieve a drawing dimension.

Consider a hypothetical brief for a flat compact and several brushes. The compact may fit inside the bag when placed there before closure, yet catch at an end tab when inserted through the actual mouth. That calls for a review of the entry geometry. Increasing the overall bag width is only one possible response, and may be unnecessary.

Coil or metal: confirm what the description refers to

YKK's zipper basics distinguishes metal elements from resin coil elements and separately identifies injection-molded resin elements.[2] The element family describes the interlocking chain, not simply the material or color of the pull tab.

If a brief requests a coil zipper, ask the supplier to identify the actual chain construction and provide a close view. If it requests a metal zipper, make clear whether metal elements are essential or whether the design requirement is only a metallic appearance. A gold-colored puller does not establish the element type.

Use appearance as one selection criterion alongside the finished pouch's operation. Compare proposed assemblies on the chosen shell, lining and opening shape. Ask whether the user can grip the puller, move the slider around the intended path and close the pouch comfortably. Treat a metal or coil preference as a starting specification, not proof of strength, service life or suitability.

Neither route should win by a general rule such as “metal is always stronger.” Where performance matters, ask for a defined requirement and evidence applicable to the proposed assembly and finished construction. A photograph cannot establish a durability result.

Keep the component choices together in the brief

“Number 5 zipper, gold puller” still leaves purchasing decisions unresolved. The selected supplier should identify the proposed chain and slider together, with the function and finishes recorded. YKK's zipper nomenclature reference illustrates why a component specification separates chain type, gauge, function, slider code, slider finish and tape details.[3] Its coding system is a reference example, not a required brand for a Rivta project.

Use the following table to request a traceable proposal. It does not prescribe one size for every makeup pouch.

Brief field What to request What it resolves
Element family and component reference Supplier's chain type, size or gauge designation, and item code or retained sample “Metal look” and an actual metal-element requirement are distinguished.
Slider and puller Compatible slider reference, quantity, function, opening direction and resting position; puller shape and finish A decorative puller choice is not mistaken for a complete operating assembly.
Tape Material specification where required, color reference and visible width on the sewn sample The buyer can review the tape against the shell and lining, rather than approving the puller color alone.
Ends and length Closed-end or other agreed construction, marked length endpoints, tape extensions and sewn end treatment The component order can be checked against the bag drawing without equating zipper length with bag width.
Finished opening Marked sample photo, loading position and largest reference item's dimensions The supplier can evaluate access as well as the empty bag's appearance.
Acceptance reference Dated component specification and corresponding pouch sample version The chosen assembly can be identified when a replacement or change is proposed.

Ask for compatibility, not an isolated size number

Have the supplier confirm the assembly it will supply. Do not authorize a slider replacement solely because its size marking looks the same. If two component options are offered, keep them as separate proposals until their references and sample behavior are clear.

Review color on the assembled pouch

Tape, elements and puller are separate visible surfaces. Specify which surface each color or finish request concerns. View them together with the actual shell fabric and lining before approving the combination; “match the zipper” is too ambiguous when one surface is shiny and another is textile.

Use an opening demonstration to locate the problem

The useful evidence is a short demonstration of the selected pouch, not a zipper being operated loose on a table. Include the reference contents or dimensionally representative dummies, and identify them in the record. An empty-pouch close-up and a loaded demonstration answer different questions.

Start by opening the zipper fully. Insert and remove the largest or least flexible item through the intended entry, using the orientation the buyer expects in normal use. Show whether it catches at the slider, the end treatment or the lining. Then load the intended assortment and close the pouch without pushing the contents down merely to make the demonstration pass.

When something fails, describe the location and condition before changing the component:

  • The item fits inside but will not enter comfortably: review the mouth and end construction, and whether the intended loading orientation is realistic.
  • The lining enters the slider path: ask for a review of lining placement and sewing clearance at that location.
  • The slider meets resistance at a bend: have the supplier review the selected assembly and the way it follows the sewn path.
  • The empty pouch closes but the loaded one does not: review the specified contents and pouch capacity alongside the closure; changing the puller alone does not address the loading requirement.

These are ways to isolate a development question, not automatic diagnoses or laboratory tests. Agree any cycle, strength or other performance testing separately, including the method and acceptance criteria. A smooth demonstration is useful evidence of access and operation under the shown conditions; it is not a service-life claim.

Send a closure brief the supplier can act on

Attach the marked opening photo or drawing to the broader makeup pouch RFQ checklist. A concise zipper request can read:

Please propose a zipper assembly for the attached pouch drawing and reference contents. Identify the element family, chain size or gauge, slider and puller, tape specification and end construction. Mark the component length endpoints separately from the finished usable opening. Show the largest reference item entering and leaving the sewn sample, then show the intended assortment loaded and the zipper closing. List unresolved choices before sample approval.

Complete that request with the actual drawing version, contents and component preferences. Keep the agreed specification beside the sample evidence, rather than leaving an unrecorded choice to a later purchasing step. If an approved chain, slider or end treatment changes, use the sample-change reapproval guide to decide what needs checking again.

Review your makeup pouch opening with Rivta.

Send the pouch reference, marked drawing, largest item's dimensions and preferred zipper appearance. Include a photo or short video if you already have a sample that is difficult to load or close.
